Your Bread Machine Is Not Just a Loaf Factory
Somewhere in your cabinet, a bread machine is quietly judging you. Good news: it's a countertop mixer, kneader, proofer, and warm little oven rolled into one, and it works while you do literally anything else. Dough cycles, jam cycles, and bake cycles can all turn into dinner with almost no effort.
The payoff is real: hands-off cooking, fewer dishes, and dinners that smell like a bakery. Here are five that earn the counter space.
The One Thing That Makes It Work: Liquids First, Dry Last
Bread machines are fussy about order. Add liquids first, then flour and dry ingredients, and keep yeast on top of the flour, away from the liquid and salt. Measure flour with a spoon and level it off, because packing the cup makes dense, sad dough. Check the dough ten minutes into kneading: it should form a smooth, slightly tacky ball. Too sticky? Add flour a tablespoon at a time. Too stiff? Add water a teaspoon at a time.
Five Dinners From One Bread Machine
1. Pizza Night Dough. Add 1 cup warm water, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 3 cups bread flour, and 2 teaspoons yeast. Run the dough cycle (about 90 minutes). Divide in two, stretch, top, and bake at 475°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
2. Stuffed Dinner Rolls. Use the same dough, then cut into 8 pieces. Wrap each around a cube of mozzarella and a slice of pepperoni, pinch closed, and bake at 375°F for 18 to 20 minutes. Serve with marinara for dipping.
3. Soft Pretzel Dinner Bites. Roll dough into ropes, cut into 1-inch bites, and simmer in water with 2 tablespoons baking soda for 30 seconds. Bake at 425°F for 12 minutes. Pair with bratwurst and mustard.
4. Naan-Style Flatbreads. Swap water for 3/4 cup warm water plus 1/4 cup plain yogurt. After the dough cycle, roll into ovals and cook in a hot dry skillet for 2 minutes per side. Scoop up curry, chili, or leftover chicken.
5. Meatloaf-Free Oatmeal Bread Sandwich Loaf. Run the basic bake cycle with a cup of rolled oats swapped for a cup of the flour. Slice thick for grilled cheese and tomato soup night.
